About VDL

The Verband der Deutschen Lederindustrie e.V. (German Leather Federation) (VDL) considers itself a service provider for the entire leather sector protecting and representing the economic and political interests of leather producers. VDL comprises more than 30 leather manufacturers and another 30 enterprises from upstream and downstream branches connected to the leather industry.

Goals and Objectives

The highest product quality has always been a major concern for the German leather industry. The German leather industry has therefore developed into an ecological leader recognised around the world, with comprehensive and trendsetting expertise in environmentally friendly leather production. Throughout decades VDL has supported its members in this. In order to live up to this ecology claim and guarantees maximum ecological quality to its customer's requirements for sustainable leather production are consistently put into practice and developed further.

 

ECO₂L Energy Controlled Leather

The German Leather Federation is dedicated to reduce the risks of the global warming on people and nature and presents with the ECO₂L label (energy controlled leather) the world’s first calculation and auditing model for determining the energy efficiency and the CO₂-emission of a tannery. ECO₂L was developed by the Forschungsgemeinschaft Leder (Leather Research Foundation) as an active contribution of a responsible leather industry towards climate protection and as a significant aspect to evaluate a sustainable leather production.
